Liesel starts getting better at reading in school a little
at a time. It shows her step fathers history by revealing a little more here
and here about him. This shows his life about being in war, having a Jewish
friend helping him avoid deat, and a promise he had made. This later leads to an
introduction to Max, the son of Mr. Hubermann's friend Erik Vandenburg, and how
their life was before Hitler. When that flashback occurred, it was confusing because it was going back and forth between Mr. Hubermann's stories to
Max's story and then to Max coming to 33 Himmel Street. With the confusion, the part that I was able to connect was that Mr. Hubermann had asked for
and kept saying was that he had an idea and why had he not thought of it before
when Max mentioned that the Mein Kamph would be the last thing to save his life. Next, we move forward to the part that Mr Hubermann, Mrs. Hubermann
and Liesel where they take care of Max. They tried to hide him in the
basement, because chances of getting caught helping would lead to severe consequences. It definately kept my attention on this book when the air raids had happened, and to add more misery to the events, Max became sick. Liesel did what she could to keep him happy if it was the last thing she couldve done for him such as placing presents. Events following this went from understanding, as in the book raid
from Liesel and Rudy and the guy who didn't like the both of them with the book
being tossed into the river, to confusing on which event came first, the parts
about Han Hubermann giving bread to the Jews and Liesel finding Max in one of
the Jew parades and Liesel and Rudy helping the Jews by leaving bread in their
path and having to run so they don't get caught, to the ending. Finally, this
is where I got sad because of how it became for Liesel to end up looking at everyone she knew having to die in an air raid that was dropped
by accident. While she saved herself by writing a book called The Book Theif where death took it earlier (spoiling the book) Rudy didn't make it. I had felt that at the end of the story Rudy should have lived, he was
the character I had come to like just like Hans Hubermann, although I had wanted
him to live he couldn't cheat death and as Death mentioned Han was awaiting for
Death to come take him. It was a good book.in the end.
